External Therapy Consult — Which Therapy, and What Comes Next
The question this consult answers
Not everyone needs a full health consultation to begin. Sometimes the question is narrower, and it is the only question standing between you and treatment: which therapy?
You know you want bodywork. You have a symptom — very often back pain, or a stiff neck, an aching knee, a shoulder that will not loosen — and you need clarity on what to choose. Should it be Abhyanga? A Sweda? A Basti? One session, or a series? And in what order? The External Therapy Consult answers exactly that, in 30 focused minutes, so you can start external therapies sooner rather than later, with a plan instead of a guess.
This page explains what the consult is, who it is for, how it differs from an initial consultation, and how a therapy plan — including the focused regimens used for musculoskeletal issues — is worked out.
What this service is
The External Therapy Consult is a focused 30-minute conversation about therapies specifically. In that half hour, we talk through what you are dealing with, which Ayurvedic therapies fit your situation, what a single session feels like, and what a series would look like if one is worth considering. We also cover what to expect before, during, and after treatment, so there are no surprises when you book.
You leave with a clear recommendation and a plan for progression — which therapy to start with, what should follow it, and how we will judge whether it is working — not a vague suggestion to "try something." The guidance comes from the practitioner who would also perform the therapies, so recommendations are grounded in hands-on experience of what each treatment actually does, not only in theory.
This is a consultation, not a treatment session. No therapy takes place inside the 30 minutes; therapies are booked separately, afterwards, following the plan we agree.
Thirty minutes is deliberately short, and the consult is structured to fit it. We start with your symptom and what you have already tried, narrow to the therapies that fit, and end with a plan for progression. If the conversation opens a bigger picture — digestion, hormones, or long-term patterns — we do not try to squeeze it into the remaining minutes. That bigger picture deserves its own appointment, and the Initial Consultation is the next step from there.
Who can use this service
This consult is for anyone whose question is "which therapy?" rather than "what is wrong with my health overall?" It is especially well suited if you:
-
Have a specific symptom — back pain, neck or shoulder stiffness, knee discomfort, or a similar musculoskeletal complaint — and want to know which therapy addresses it best.
-
Know you want Ayurvedic bodywork but are unsure which therapy suits your situation, or what a series would involve.
-
Want to start external therapies sooner rather than later, without committing to a full consultation first.
-
Have had a therapy before — Abhyanga, for example — and want to know what the next step should be.
-
Are considering a series and want an honest view of what it would involve, how many sessions it might take, and what to expect from it.
-
Have been offered a therapy elsewhere, or read about one, and want a practitioner's view on whether it fits you.
You do not need any experience of Ayurveda, and you do not need a diagnosis. You need a symptom, a question, and half an hour.
Clarity in action: the back-pain example
Back pain is the clearest example of what this consult does, because it shows why "which therapy?" is a real clinical question and not just a booking choice.
Abhyanga — warm-oil full-body massage with steam — works for most cases of pain. It is nourishing, relaxing, and grounding, and for many people it is exactly the right starting point: it loosens the whole body, calms the nervous system, and gives a clear sense of how you respond to warmth, oil, and touch.
But for musculoskeletal issues, a focused regimen can be more effective than a general therapy alone. For a back that needs focused work, the progression I often recommend looks like this:
-
Churna Pinda — a warm bolus of herbal powders, used first to loosen stiffness and prepare the area with dry, warming heat.
-
Patra Pinda or Jambeera Pinda — a warm bolus of herbal leaves, or of lemon, chosen for the case at hand, bringing heat and herbs more deeply into the painful, stiff tissues.
-
Shashtika Sali Pinda Sweda — a warm bolus of specially prepared rice, used next to nourish and strengthen the tissues once they have been loosened and warmed.
-
Kati Basti — an external Vasti for the back, in which warm medicated oil is held in a reservoir over the lower back, deeply nourishing exactly the area that hurts.
Each step prepares the next: loosening, then warming more deeply, then nourishing and strengthening, then targeting the area itself. That progression — rather than any single therapy in isolation — is what makes a focused regimen powerful for musculoskeletal issues. And the same logic applies elsewhere: a knee problem may lead to Janu Basti, a neck problem to Greeva Basti, with the Pinda Sweda steps chosen to match.
This is an example, not a prescription for every back. Your progression depends on your back, your body, and what has already been tried — and working that out is precisely what the consult is for.
Figuring out what is most applicable, and the plan to follow
Choosing a therapy is not a matter of picking from a list. In the consult, we work out what is most applicable for you at this time, by looking at:
-
The symptom itself — where it is, how long it has been there, what makes it better or worse, and what you have already tried.
-
The pattern around it — whether it is stiffness, weakness, swelling, sharp pain, or a dull ache, and whether it travels or stays put.
-
Your body and your life — what your days ask of you, what you can realistically attend, and what has helped or not helped before.
-
The therapies themselves — what each one does, what it demands of you, and what a series of it would actually involve.
From that, we agree a plan for progression: which therapy to start with, what should follow it and in what order, roughly how many sessions to expect, and how we will judge whether it is working. If the plan needs adjusting as treatment proceeds, it gets adjusted — the plan is a working document, not a sentence passed at the first visit.
How this differs from an initial consultation
This distinction matters, and it is worth stating plainly, because booking the wrong consultation wastes your time and money.
The Initial Consultation is the entire picture. It is 90 minutes, it covers your full health history, your diet and lifestyle, your current medicines, and Ayurvedic diagnostics including pulse and tongue analysis, and within 24 to 36 hours you receive a detailed written suggestion sheet covering diet, lifestyle, herbs, and therapies, with a 15-minute call to go over it. It is the right starting point when you want a complete understanding of your health, when several concerns are tangled together, or when digestion, hormones, sleep, or long-term patterns are part of the picture.
The External Therapy Consult is one question, answered well. It is 30 minutes, it covers your symptom and your therapy options, and it ends in a therapy plan. It does not cover your full health history, your diet, or your herbal plan, and it does not produce a suggestion sheet. It is the right starting point when your question is "which therapy, and what series?" and you want to start treatment sooner rather than later.
The honest rule between them: the best is the Initial Consultation, because it gives the entire picture, and a therapy plan built on the entire picture is always the more precise one. But the best should not be the enemy of a good start. If what you need right now is clarity on therapies and a quicker route into treatment, this consult is the way — and if, during it, a bigger picture emerges (digestion, hormones, long-term patterns), I will say so, and the Initial Consultation becomes the better next step. Either way, you leave with an honest recommendation, not a sale.
If you have already had an initial consultation here, you do not need this consult: your therapy plan is already in your suggestion sheet, and follow-up consultations are where it gets reviewed and adjusted.
What you leave with, and what happens after
You leave the consult with three things: a clear recommendation (which therapy, and why), a plan for progression (what follows what, and roughly how many sessions), and a sense of what to expect from each step. From there, therapies are booked separately, in the order agreed, and the plan is reviewed as treatment proceeds — if a step is not doing what it should, the progression changes, rather than being followed blindly.
One more thing matters about how this guidance is given. I am both the Ayurvedic practitioner who assesses you and the licensed massage therapist who performs the therapies, so a recommendation here is not theoretical: it is made by the person whose hands will do the work, and who knows what each therapy feels like, what it demands, and what it can and cannot do.
Held in person at the Sunnyvale clinic, or on Zoom
The External Therapy Consult is held in person at The Ayurvedic Life clinic in Sunnyvale, serving clients from across the greater Bay Area. Meeting in person suits this consult: the symptom can be seen and discussed directly, and the conversation is grounded in the body that will receive the treatment. It can also be done on Zoom from your own home: the conversation, the recommendation, and the progression plan are the same, and where seeing the area helps, it can be shown on camera.
What to bring
Nothing formal is needed, but a little preparation makes the half hour go further. Before your visit, notice:
-
What the symptom is, where it is, how long it has been there, and what makes it better or worse.
-
What you have already tried — therapies, exercises, medicines, anything — and what helped or did not.
-
Any medicines or health conditions relevant to bodywork, and any recent reports, if you have them.
-
What you hope treatment will let you do again — the activity, the movement, the ordinary day you want back.
That last point matters more than it sounds. A therapy plan built around what you want to do again is a plan with a destination, and destinations make progress measurable.
Frequently asked questions
Q: What is an External Therapy Consult?
A: A focused 30-minute conversation about Ayurvedic therapies specifically. We talk through what you are dealing with, which therapies fit your situation, what a single session feels like, and what a series would look like. You leave with a clear recommendation and a plan for progression, not a vague suggestion.
Q: How is it different from an Initial Consultation?
A: The Initial Consultation is the entire picture: 90 minutes covering your full health history, diet, lifestyle, medicines, and Ayurvedic diagnostics, followed by a detailed written suggestion sheet and a 15-minute call. The External Therapy Consult is one question answered well: 30 minutes on your symptom and your therapy options, ending in a therapy plan. It does not cover your full health, your diet, or your herbal plan.
Q: Should I book this, or an Initial Consultation?
A: Book the Initial Consultation if you want the entire picture, if several concerns are tangled together, or if digestion, hormones, sleep, or long-term patterns are part of the picture. Book the External Therapy Consult if your question is "which therapy, and what series?" and you want to start external therapies sooner rather than later. If a bigger picture emerges during this consult, I will say so, and the Initial Consultation becomes the better next step.
Q: How long is the consult?
A: Thirty minutes. That is enough for a focused therapy question — your symptom, your options, and a progression plan — precisely because it does not try to cover your whole health picture. The half hour is structured around that one decision: your symptom and what you have tried, the therapies that fit, and the plan. If a bigger picture emerges, it is not squeezed into the remaining minutes — it becomes the reason to book an Initial Consultation next, so the bigger question gets the full attention it deserves, in its own appointment. A full picture needs the 90-minute initial consultation.
Q: Who is this consult for?
A: Anyone whose question is "which therapy?" — most often someone with a specific symptom such as back pain, neck or shoulder stiffness, or knee discomfort, who wants clarity before committing to treatment. Also anyone who knows they want bodywork but is unsure which therapy suits them, or what a series would involve.
Q: I have back pain — what would you recommend?
A: It depends on your back, which is why the consult exists. Abhyanga works for most cases of pain and is often the right starting point. But for musculoskeletal issues, a focused regimen can be more effective: typically Churna Pinda first, then Patra Pinda or Jambeera Pinda, then Shashtika Sali Pinda Sweda, followed by Kati Basti for the back. Which of these, in what order, and how many sessions, is decided in the consult after hearing your case.
Q: What are Churna Pinda, Patra Pinda, Jambeera Pinda, Shashtika Sali Pinda Sweda, and Kati Basti?
A: They are traditional Ayurvedic therapies. Churna Pinda is a warm bolus of herbal powders; Patra Pinda a warm bolus of herbal leaves and Jambeera Pinda a warm bolus of lemon, each bringing heat and herbs into stiff, painful tissues; Shashtika Sali Pinda Sweda a warm bolus of specially prepared rice that nourishes and strengthens tissues; and Kati Basti an external Vasti in which warm medicated oil is held over the lower back. Similar Basti treatments exist for other areas — Janu for the knee, Greeva for the neck.
Q: Do I receive a treatment during the consult?
A: No. The consult is a conversation and a plan, not a treatment session. Therapies are booked separately, afterwards, in the order agreed. This is also what keeps the consult honest: the recommendation is not tied to filling a treatment slot that day.
Q: Can I start therapies right away?
A: Yes — that is one of the reasons this consult exists. Because it is short and focused, you can book your first therapy soon after it, rather than waiting for a full consultation process to run its course. How soon depends on availability, and we agree the order and timing in the consult itself.
Q: What if my problem turns out to be bigger than one symptom?
A: Then I will say so. If digestion, hormones, sleep, or long-term patterns turn out to be part of the picture, the Initial Consultation is the better next step, because a therapy plan built on the entire picture is more precise. You will not be sold a therapy plan for a problem that needs a fuller assessment first.
Q: Which therapies can we discuss?
A: All of them: Abhyanga, Shirodhara, Sweda therapies, Basti treatments, head, foot, and face therapies, and massage. The consult narrows that full range down to what fits you, your symptom, and your life.
Q: What should I bring?
A: Nothing formal. It helps to know your symptom (where, how long, what helps or worsens it), what you have already tried, any medicines or conditions relevant to bodywork, and what you hope treatment will let you do again.
Q: Where is the consult held?
A: In person at The Ayurvedic Life clinic in Sunnyvale, serving clients from across the greater Bay Area, or on Zoom from your own home. Meeting in person suits this consult, since the symptom can be seen and discussed directly, but the conversation, the recommendation, and the progression plan are the same on video.
Q: How do I book, and what is the booking policy?
A: Book through the booking calendar. Appointments need to be booked by 6:00 PM the evening before; same-day appointments are by phone or text only, at (408) 583-8011. A card is required to hold every appointment, and the cancellation policy is 24 hours.
Q: What happens after the consult?
A: You book the therapies in the order agreed, and the plan is reviewed as treatment proceeds. If a step is not doing what it should, the progression changes rather than being followed blindly. If your wider health picture later becomes the question, an initial consultation is the next step from there.
